Open Education Resources OER Books
Textbook prices have increased at a rate that far exceeds the rate of inflation. A recent study by Follett notes that textbook prices have risen by 812% since 1978–that’s more than twice the rate of cost of a new home. A book purchased in 1978 for $25 would now cost $203. This has been an ongoing financial challenge for many of our students. Obviously, textbook prices are not an issue just for Allegheny; there are nationwide efforts to provide alternatives to expensive textbooks. Books and other material, known as Open Education Resources, or OER, are being developed, and shared through a number of organizations and venues.
